Expertise

- How do this items question the credibility of experts sources?

To begin with, what do we refer when we talk about expertise?
The term "expertise" is frequently used in order to refer to a specialist knowledge and skill in a particular field. Expertise results from training and experience in that field.

  • Item A: Medical Misdirection. This item is questioning the medicine field, it is questioning doctors and how they  " fail to a hole society". Illich states that doctor diagnose and threat the individual rather than focusing on the wider society. It says that "medical establishments has become a major threat to health". So the source is questioning the doctors, doctors are seen as a threat to society.

  • Item C: Drapetomania. This source is a clear misunderstanding from an expertise towards salves. The text establishes that the White race unknown a disease that affects the African-American slaves. This disease was "discovered" by an expert called Dr. Samuel Cartwright, and he states that slaves are suffering of Drapetomania, a mental disease which was a "mania to seek freedom".  For Cartwright, this disease caused some slaves to escape from their masters, and to be "saved" slaves had to be caught and treated so to "cured" them. This item involves wrong judgments and it is also related to changing expertise.

  • Item D: "Curing Gays".  Once more, Item D is questioning doctors. Homosexuality is seen as a terrible disease which needs to be treated. This is a clear example of prejudice towards a group of people with different likes.
